1화 : 무궁화 꽃이 피던 날
빚더미에 짓눌린 중년 남자 기훈.
그가 일확천금을 노리고 의문의 게임에 뛰어든다.
그런데 게임이 시작되자마자 눈앞에 펼쳐진 것은, 보고도 믿기 힘든 경악과 공포의 현장.

 

✅ 기훈의 현실 – 궁지에 몰린 삶 Gi-hun’s Harsh Reality
성기훈은 이전에 대기업에 다녔지만 현재는 해고된 후 무직 상태로, 어머니와 함께 살고 있는 인물이다. 도박과 투자 실패로 수천만 원의 빚을 지고 있으며, 생활비도 버거운 상황이다.
기훈은 어머니 몰래 은행에서 돈을 빼 도박장에서 경마를 하고, 우연히 돈을 따지만 곧바로 빚쟁이들에게 붙잡혀 도장을 강제로 찍고 위협받는다. 딸의 생일을 챙기려 하지만, 돈도 선물도 마땅치 않아 난감한 상태다.

Seong Gi-hun, once an employee at a large company, is now unemployed and living with his elderly mother. He’s drowning in debt due to gambling and failed investments. He even steals money from his mother’s account to bet on horse racing. Though he wins some money, he is quickly caught and beaten by loan sharks who force him to sign away his rights. Struggling even to buy a birthday gift for his daughter, Gi-hun is in complete financial despair.

 

 

​✅ 수상한 제안 – 딱지 게임의 시작 A Suspicious Offer – The Paper Tile Flipping Game
기훈은 지하철역에서 양복을 입은 수상한 남자를 만나게 되고, "딱지치기 게임"을 제안받는다. 
이긴다면 10만 원을 받고, 지면 상대방에게 뺨을 맞는다. 돈이 절박했던 기훈은 계속 도전하다 결국 이기게 되고, 남자는 “더 큰 상금이 걸린 게임에 참가하지 않겠느냐”고 제안한다. 
명함을 받아든 기훈은 결국 전화를 걸어 참가를 신청하게 된다.

Gi-hun meets a well-dressed stranger at a subway station who offers him a game of "Paper Tile Flipping Game." 

If Gi-hun wins, he gets 100,000 won; if he loses, he gets slapped. 

After numerous tries, he finally wins. 

The man then offers him a chance to participate in a series of games with huge cash prizes. 

Gi-hun, desperate for money, eventually makes the call and signs up.

 

 

✅ 게임장 도착 – 현실에서 동떨어진 세계 Arrival at the Game Facility
기훈은 검은 승합차에 탑승한 뒤 마취당한 상태로 깨어나, 거대한 기숙사 형태의 공간에서 눈을 뜬다. 

이곳에는 총 456명의 참가자가 있었고, 모두가 각자의 이유로 막다른 인생을 살고 있는 사람들이다. 

참가자들은 게임 참가에 동의하는 서류에 서명하게 된다.

Gi-un is picked up in a van, gassed unconscious, and wakes up in a mysterious dormitory with 455 other participants. Everyone there has hit rock bottom in life for various reasons.

They’re asked to sign consent forms to participate in the games.

 

 

✅ 첫 번째 게임 – '무궁화 꽃이 피었습니다' The First Game – “Red Light, Green Light”
참가자들은 놀이처럼 보이는 ‘무궁화 꽃이 피었습니다’ 게임장에 도착한다. 

움직이면 안 되는 룰을 어길 시 총격으로 즉사한다는 사실이 드러나면서 모두가 충격에 빠진다. 실제로 수십 명이 첫 게임 도중 즉사하고, 그제야 이 게임이 목숨을 건 서바이벌이라는 걸 깨닫는다.
기훈은 가까스로 탈락을 피하고 결승선을 통과한다.
한편, 참가자 001번(할아버지)은 이 게임을 마치 즐기는 듯한 모습으로 주목받는다.

The players are led into a field for a game of “Red Light, Green Light.” 

At first, it seems like innocent childhood play—ut those who move during “red light” are shot dead on the spot.

Panic spreads, and dozens are killed. It becomes clear this is a brutal survival game with real consequences.

Gi-hun barely survives and crosses the finish line.
Contestant 001, an elderly man, seems to be oddly enjoying the game.

 

 

✅ 프론트맨의 존재 The Front Man
모든 게임을 통제하는 가면을 쓴 조직원들과, 이들을 관리하고 명령을 내리는 프론트맨의 모습도 등장한다. 

프론트맨은 고화질 감시화면을 통해 참가자들과 게임 상황을 면밀히 지켜보고 있다.

Overseeing the entire game is a mysterious masked figure known as the Front Man. 

He watches the horrifying game unfold through surveillance monitors, reporting the progress to someone unseen. 

The organization behind the game appears systematic, secretive, and deeply organized.

💭 1화 감상 및 느낀 점 / Episode 1: Impressions and Thoughts
평범한(?) 놀이가 목숨을 건 서바이벌이 되는 순간의 충격은 강렬했다. 단순한 게임이지만, 생명이 걸린 순간 게임의 긴장감은 극도로 상승하며 시청자를 몰입하게 만든다.
성기훈을 비롯한 참가자들의 삶은 허구가 아니라 오늘날 많은 이들이 처한 ‘경제적 절망’과 맞닿아 있다. 빚, 가족 문제, 실직, 도박 중독 등 현실의 무게를 날것 그대로 보여준다. 오징어 게임은 그저 '게임'이 아니라 자본주의 사회의 어두운 단면을 날카롭게 꼬집는다.
기훈의 인간적인 면모와 함께 1번 참가자인 할아버지(오일남)의 미스터리한 태도, 프론트맨이라는 인물의 정체 등은 앞으로 전개될 이야기의 기대감을 높인다.
The sudden shift from a children's game to a deadly execution creates a visceral shock. The tension of the “game” escalates dramatically, hooking the audience with a sense of dread and curiosity.
Gi-hun and the other participants are not just fictional characters—they reflect real people facing poverty, debt, and societal failure. The show sharply criticizes the cruelty of capitalist systems and the desperation it breeds.
Gi-un’s flawed but human personality, the strange joy of Contestant 001, and the eerie presence of the Front Man set up strong character dynamics and mysteries to unfold.
